Scrimshaw Powderhorn and Fingerwoven Strap by Dave and Janet Hasler
This is a new horn I recently finished. It is 14 1/4 inches from the tip to the end of the carved finial plug. The horn itself is 14 1/2 inches measured from the tip and traveling around the horn at the curved bottom. The scrimshaw designs are folk art based depicting birds, floral and vines, heart, date, and a compass motif. It is beautifully aged and tinted. The carved plug is in a heart shape complimenting the scrimshawed heart motif, while the end of the horn is made from pine with a brass plate and iron staple for attaching the strap. My wife Janet made this handsome fingerwoven strap from yellow oxide, and rusty/maroon red wool. The long fringe ends were braided in groups of four and decorated with white Czech beads. It is 46 inches in length and 1 1/4 inches wide. The long beaded fringe ends make for a total length of 68 inches. I did not attach it to the horn in the pictures so I could move it around for photographing. Please email me for more photos since I can only show 2 here on the CLA site and that does not show the full artwork. This horn is completely decorated with scrimshaw motifs so it can be worn as a right, or left horn. Quillwork Hunting Bag by Dave and Janet Hasler
This is a beautiful eastern woodland Indian shoulder bag I recently completed. It is based on woodland tribal design elements. The bag is made from smoked brain tanned deer and is fully lined with natural linen fabric. It is authentic to the 18th century pattern used by the various tribes to hold a variety of items from trail food to shooting supplies. This bag measures 8 inches in width and 9 1/2 inches in height. The beautiful strap is made by my wife Janet and is fingerwoven linen flax cording. The ends of the fingerweaving are decorated with various beadwork techniques. The bag is edged with white glass Czech beads in the fret pattern as seen on the original leggings in the Lt.Caldwell collection. All stitching was done with natural linen thread. It is decorated with woodland motif quillwork in a geometric lightning bolt, a large band of red quillwork on the top with white and black shapes, and a turtle design done with dark and light green, yellow, and white. I harvest my own quills and dye them using natural plant materials. There are 40 brass cones filled with red dyed deer hair decorating the bottom. PLEASE NOTE: This was a very long time consuming project. Email me for more photos.
This handsome shoulder bag would make a nice addition for anyone doing a historic woodland Indian or items on Longhunter reanactor impression. It also makes a beautiful decorative piece for any frontier motif in your home or office.

Wampum Wrist Ties by Dave Hasler
I recently completed this matching pair of wampum wrist ties woven in the traditional manner using a heavy smoked brain tanned deer leather lacing as the warp and a sinew material for the weft securely locking each bead in place. This pair of wrist ties is made in a manner to be worn using the glass beads to adjust the fit allowing the lacing to hang as a fringe. These were worn by woodland Indian tribes and by early colonial longhunters, scouts, and frontiersman. This pair is made four beads tall and measures 1 ½ inch in width by 7 inches in length. The lacing is left long for securing to the wrist. This pair is has a color scheme of black with a white pattern.
I use an imported glass wampum bead made from the same Czechoslovakian producer of 18th century wampum. These items are hand crafted historically authentic to that era. The business has been owned by the same family since its days as a leading manufacturer of trade beads. The Czech plant produces the glass wampum on the same machines used over 200 years ago.
This pair of wrist ties would make a great addition for any woodland Indian or Longhunter reenactor. It would also make a beautiful addition as a decorative piece for any frontier motif in your home or office.
